Below you can watch the second video that I’ve made in Hong Kong. Drone footage of the city and its buildings. This one has some more footage filmed during night time. So it is sometimes pretty dark. I wanted to capture the lights from the buildings. I guess I am experimenting a little bit. This one also contains some of the parts which I cut out of the first video. I still wanted to include it somehow. In this video it looks like I am pretty close to crash the drone in to a building. And yes, I didn’t really have control of it. I just launched it in the middle of the city and flew away over and around some buildings and into the sky. I couldn’t see anything on the display except for a few seconds here and there until I ran out of battery and it amazingly enough flew itself back to me.

At one point I launched the drone from the bed inside of a hotel room and flew it out through the balcony door. Unfortunately the room was too small for the camera to capture the sequence in a nice way, so the footage didn’t come out as cool as I was hoping. Which led to that I cut it out in the end. I flew around filming the streets and the buildings for a while and had an awesome time enjoying myself. I was standing on the balcony as I was driving it. But when I was done and about to fly it back in through the balcony door again, the damn thing refused to come back inside. (You can see me sticking my head out through the balcony door in the corner of the screen 1 minute in to the video, when it is on its way back. It looks a b it creapy). It stopped about one and a half meter away out from the balcony. Just out of reach for my hands. It was hovering there and making its ridiculous noise and blinking its lights as if it was a fully alive being with fear to come back inside. It was frightened and still filming me as I was trying to reach out for it without any success (I look completely ridiculous on that footage, so I cut that out. But it was funny). I had no idea what was going on. Afterwards I got to know that it was some setting on which wouldn’t allow it to go any closer then 1.5 meters to any wall. Which is probably why I still hadn’t crashed it at that point. So that was good. I kept on trying in all sorts of ways. To attract it in. To force it and trick it by backing off and driving it quickly back in as I was trying to reach out for it with my arm, only to almost getting myself to fall out from the balcony. so still no success. After a while the battery was almost out and it started to make desperate noises and it started to go lower to try to do an emergency landing. I forced it back up and had even less control. It almost felt like it flew away by itself to land somewhere as I was trying to counter up its ongoing landing process. I felt no control what so ever and it was pretty scary. The flying thing flew away and disappeared. I could see on the camera how it flew away to some private rooftop where there were people sitting, and it tried to land there. If it would have landed there I would never have got it back. So I just forced it out on the street and let it land by itself there. In the middle of the street by a red light and a crossing. Among people and cars passing by. That was pretty exciting (This part you can see in the video at about 2 minutes in). I ran out from my hotel room, down the stairs and out on the street to catch it. I yelled at it for being naughty on my way back up the stairs. I told it “Enough flying for you now for a while! No more fun for you!”. Then I packed it away.

I think the fact that I thought it looked creepy seeing myself sticking my head out the window in the corner of the video at one sequence made me want to make the video have a bit of a “spy” feeling to it. It is considered as a spy tool after all and that is why it is so regulated and even forbidden in some areas/countries. And I can see why. I did’t want to leave that bit out completely. So I put on some mysterious drum and bass music and made it into kind of a “creepy-spy-feeling-video” with lots of night footage. Another sequence that I think have that feeling to it as well, is when I am flying it out from King’s Park in Kowloon and you can see some random people from behind just walking there down the road. Well, I guess I am just experimenting, going with the flow and having some fun playing around when making this video. Anyways, enjoy.
