Painting faces – with only black paint.

Painting faces. It is already many years ago by now. I remember that I wanted to practice painting faces with just black and white without any shade. Then I decided to look at pictures of some famous faces and try to paint them with just black acrylic paint on white paper. The faces I ended up painting was; Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, Neil Young, Marcel Proust, Elvis Presley, Edith Piaf and the cover of the Scarface movie. A little bit of a random collection. The ones depicting Bob Dylan And Michel Jackson I don’t have any pictures of. They didn’t turn out any good anyway. But the other ones I still have pictures of, which I am going to post here.

The fail

This one is depicting Marcel Proust. I was reading a very heavy book by Marcel Proust at the time (In Search of Lost time / Rememberance of Things Past). Hence why I picked that guy to make a portrait of. It was really difficult at the start and I was trying to paint the face from the old famous photo in a pose where the chin is leaning on the hand and one finger is sticking up along the cheek. How could I have known that hands are something among the most difficult things to paint. Hands and water, they say. It became such a catastrophe that I had to paint over the hand with something like a red fence. To make it look like the person is sticking his head up to look over a fence. The painting became a lot more humorous in that way.
