Below I will be listing my favorite instruments which is good for traveling. When you are out traveling you have to think about how you pack your bag and how much you are carrying. But still you should make sure that you will be able to practice some music (if you are interested in music, of course). To play music is a great way to stay creative. Without music, life would be a mistake. As Friedrich Nietzche once said. And the good thing with music is that when it hits you, it doesn’t hurt. As Bob Marley once said. One of the best devices and tools that there is for creating music is also available in portable format. I am thinking of a computer. On a laptop you can have all sorts of different programs used for making and playing music. Some pretty heavy programs for professional music production, in fact. But even with just a tablet or a phone you can play music and instruments in hundreds of different ways. And even make music to some extent.

But sometimes you want to play acoustic instruments and you can’t really be traveling with any big acoustic instruments. Also most instruments are pretty fragil and sensitive as well as expensive if they are of quality. I would not recommend to go traveling with instruments like piano or cello unless you are doing it as a touring performer with an organized band. I have been traveling quite a lot with a guitar. That works, but it is starting to stretch the limit for what you want to carry. I often miss a guitar but I don’t miss traveling with it. I was also traveling with a ukulele for a long time before that. Something which is easier to carry. It is nice to sit down in a park, or on a beach, or just on a street and play music. Do a few songs or just jam out. Instruments which is easier to carry is often a little bit more limited. Like in the case with the ukulele, compared to a guitar. It may not have as nice sound etc. But anyways, here is my list of some if the best portable instruments which I recommend for travelers.
Akai Mibi keyboard with pads and knobs. a tool I have used a fair bit myself. Just connect it to a laptop and use with softwares like Ableton Live, Logic, Garage Band etc. It is small and portable and works great for making music but maybe not the best option for jamming live. I use to be traveling with it. But not any more.
Ukulele – probably the most common and easiest among the small and charming acoustic string instruments. Perfect for traveling.
Compact Travel Didgeridoo. A didgeridoo is an awesome instrument but the traditional version is not ideal for traveling , since it is long and fragile. Here is the perfect solution.
This compact flat hand cajon drum is probably the most portable of the drums. If you are a traveling drummer, (I know you are out there). This is a must.
Tin whistle – a traditional Irish little flute. I have heard about people choosing this instrument because of how easy it is to carry when traveling. A friend of mine recently bought one.
A portable, flexible and rollable piano for the pianists. Haven’t tried this one but I like the idea. Looks funny.
Harmonica – super portable and super good instruments for jamming. Great around a fire, particularly if someone ells still bothers to carry around a guitar. Harmonicas goes in different keys. So if you are a serious harmonica player you should carry a few of them. But they are small, so no problem (this example goes in C).
Mouth harp – This medieval, vibrating instruments works superb for traveling people. This version comes in a nice case which protects it when having it in your bag together with other stuff.
Thumb piano – This instrument would definitely impress on the traveling jammers.
